The villages downhill are all worth a visit...
Sutrio, with its beautifully renovated centre, characterized by typical stone houses fronting onto flagstone streets. The local carvers' and sculptors' workshops are famous as well. Consider a trip to the Ethnographic and Historiographic Museum "Gaudenzio Straulino Teno", with the Holy Nativity Representation. It is a wooden work reproducing the details of the habits and customs of the village. The parish church of Ognissanti was built on the namesake hill in the early 19th century by the architect Francesco Schiavi from Tolmezzo, reusing the old 17th century belfry of a previous church. Interesting archaeological finds have been unearthed in the southern walls of the hill, including some fragments of capitals and iron anchoring rings.
Zuglio, with the "Polse di Côugnes" – a reception and refreshment centre – the botanical garden, the astronomical observatory and the belfry for the school of "scampanotadòrs" (bell ringers). The 15th-century Pieve di San Pietro lies nearby. On the old little road from Sezza to the Pieve di San Pietro in Zuglio you cross an old stone bridge on the Bueda torrent. In the centre of the village you can find the Municipal Archaeological Museum "Iulium Carnicum", which displays the finds and allows you to visit the excavations of the ancient Roman town of Iulium Carnicum.
Arta Terme is a renowned spa centre characterized by the presence of a spring with sulphurous water that has been known and exploited since ancient times. In Arta Terme and in the surrounding hamlets you can visit the Chiesetta di Santo Spirito (15th century), the Chiesetta di San Nicolò (15th century), the parish church of Piano d'Arta (1781) and the parish church of San Martino Rivalpo Valle (15th century).
Lauco, with the Santuario della Madonna di Trava of 1660 with the 14 "mainette" (little chapels) of the Way of the Cross. This votive chapel or "maine" is famous for the legend that here babies who had died shortly after being born were resurrected in order to be baptized, so that they could go to Heaven. A little before Trava, in Avaglio, you can find the Chiesetta di S. Michele of the 14th century. Archaelogical sites with prehistoric traces are to be found in Muris di Lauco and in Chiauianis di Lauco, with three graves dating back to the Roman times. Historical and typical houses: Casa Gressani in Lauco, the 18th-century Palazzo Beretta, with a fountain, the Vinaio dairy, the wash house in Avaglio. In the hamlet of Trava you can find Palazzo Beorchia, of the 17th century – a typical example of stately Carnic architecture. In Lauco the Mostra Permanente della Civiltà Contadina (Permanent Exhibition of the Peasant Culture), which is dedicated to the milk processing cycle in the Lauco plateau, has been recently opened.
The Forra delle Vinadia canyon (Tor di Meni da l'ors), considered among the most challenging of the Alps, is more than 200 m deep. In order to complete the entire canyon hike, you need to be trained and equipped with specific mountaineering gear. The route is a continuous alternation of waterfalls, lakes and long stretches flanked by rock faces that are so close-up that often the sky cannot be seen from the bottom of the canyon. The latter is named after the ancient queen of the Carni – Vinadia – who threw herself into the gorge together with her whole army to avoid falling in the hands of the Romans who were chasing her.
