On the southern slope of Monte Avanza, which dominates the Alpine pasture, the old copper and silver mines, with the remains of the pestles used to smash minerals can still be found. The historically interesting area can be reached walking by following the CAI marked trail no. 173 which begins at the hairpin bend 100 m east from the hut and climbs rather steeply up to a fork where CAI marked trail no. 177 opens on the right.
Site
Forni Avoltri (Ud)
From Cima Sappada you must follow the signs for the Springs of the Piave river driving up the Sesis Valley on a paved – but occasionally very narrow – road. After some six kilometres turn right on a dirt road and, after 500 metres, cross the Passo Avanza and climb down to the underlying Alpine farm. You can also climb up to the pasture from Pierabech, in the municipality of Forni Avoltri, on a sometimes-uneven road, before turning right at the first and second forks, and left at the third one.

And then...
From the Malga Casa Vecchia, after reaching the road climbing up from Cima Sappada, you can continue towards the springs of the Piave river and to the “Pier Fortunato Calvi” shelter.
In Forni Avoltri the "Cemùot chi erin" (How we were) ethnographic collection, where the tools of traditional crafts and trades are displayed and rooms and settings from the 19th century to the second world war are reproduced, is worth a visit. You can visit the mines on Monte Avanza. While the Gracco “banned wood” – a wildlife sanctuary – and the Bordaglia lake are two other spectacular locations that can't be missed.
