Pramosio

On the path connecting Pramosio and Malpasso, you can find the headstone dedicated to the Carnic carrier Maria Plozner Mentil, who died during World War I while delivering ammunitions to front-line units. Her story, and that of all Carnic women carriers, was gradually forgotten until 1997, when Oscar Luigi Scalfaro, the then President of the Italian Republic, awarded her a Gold Medal of Military Valour. From Passo Pramosio you can visit the countless vestiges of World War I, i.e. tunnels, trenches and emplacements.

Site

Paluzza (Ud)

From Paluzza you climb along the SS 52-bis road heading toward the Passo di Monte Croce Carnico. After reaching the fork to Cleulis, you keep on the right and climb straight ahead to enter the “Pramosio Forest” above it, which is also owned by the Region. Here the paved road ends and you drive on along the comfortable dirt road which, after long hairpin bends, leads to the Alpine pasture.

And then...

Going beyond the dairy hut, along a cart track, you can reach the Casera Malpasso/Morgante shelter, the Casera Manze and, higher up, the Casera Pramosio Alta, with the wonderful Avostanis lake which is dominated by one of the finest cliffs of the Eastern Alps.

In the municipality of Paluzza, in an area called Enfretors, you can see the 13th-century Moscarda tower, an ancient bastion of the efficient customs defensive system named "Castrum Moscardum". The 18th-century church of San Daniele Profeta lies on the hill and overlooks the road leading to the important Passo Monte Croce and holding the remains of Roman fortifications. Some pillboxes dating to WWII are also visible. The tower hosts an Alpine botanical garden showcasing autochthonous plant species.

In the village centre, the Duomo di Santa Maria incorporates the 15th-century apse of the ancient small church where Giuseppe Furnio, a painter from San Vito and follower of Pomponio Amalteo, worked in 1555, frescoing the groin vault and the lunettes. In the same chapel, you can admire Antonio Tironi’s wooden altarpiece dating back to the first decade of the 16th century. Another altarpiece dated 1661 portraying the Madonna del Carmine is also worth seeing. A large organ is also housed inside the church.

In Timau the "Fontanon”, a marvellous perennial karst spring and the banned wood can be seen from the SS 52 state road. In the same village, you can visit the church of Cristo Re, which is particularly interesting – historically and religiously – and hosts a 15-m-long wooden crucifix, the ossuary and the museum "La Zona Carnia durante la Grande Guerra” (The Carnia Area during the Great War).

In Cleulis di Paluzza, after years of neglect, a group of volunteers refurbished and fixed up the rooms where milk was weighed and processed. The old dairy can be visited by appointment by phoning 3356100733.
