The shrubs of green alder are an ideal habitat for the grouse. The male black grouse has a characteristic lyre-shaped tail and blue-black feathers, except in the undersides of its wings and on the side of the neck, where it is white.

From the Sauris side: after reaching the Pieltinis farm, you continue along a dirt road toward the Monte Pieltinis and, after crossing the namesake saddle, you descend to the hut. From the Pesarina valley side: along the road that from Pesariis leads to Pradibosco, around hundred metres from the relics of a sawmill, you keep on the left and reach the right-hand bank of the Pesarina torrent. After around 1.5 km, at Cuesta di Sotto, a long series of hairpin bends begins and, making sure to keep the right at a fork, you climb up to the Vinadia Grande Alpine farm.

And then...
Ascending northward you can reach the Malins and Festons farms and from here descend to Sauris di Sopra (CAI trail no. 204); continuing southward you reach the Pieltinis and Gerona farms, then descend to Lateis di Sauris (CAI trail no. 206).
Sauris is an old village with a characteristic architecture: its houses and cottages are built with the "Blockbau" technique (overlapping logs with joined notched corners), with roofs covered with wood shingles. Its two parts, Sauris di Sopra and Sauris di Sotto, have been recently restructured and the influences of the Austrian architecture are easy to spot. The Saurano, a German dialect, is peculiar. In the village you can find the ethnographic centre "Haus van der Zahre" which hosts the exhibition "La storia riemersa - Cimeli di guerra / Khriekhgedeinkhn" (The re-emerged history - War memorabilia) and the S. Osvaldo Historiographic Centre – Museum, showing everyday life over seven centuries, as well as several craft workshops. The PGI raw ham, the "speck", and the craft beer are all famous.
In natural and environmental terms, the view of the namesake lake, with the majestic dam, is really fascinating. In the woods you can encounter roe deer, deer, chamois, martens, skunks, beech martens, squirrels, dormice, voles, black grouses and capercaillies, various diurnal and nocturnal raptors and also lynxes and brown bears, for some years now.
The Pinacoteca Davanzo art gallery inside Palazzo Unfer offers an interesting collection of works of art and the geological museum, with a rich repertoire of rocks and fossils covering a period of 400 million years, are both in Ampezzo. The church of San Daniele, the church of the Santissima Trinità (in Oltris) and the Palazzo Beorchia - Nigris of the 17th century – a typical example of Carnic architecture – are also worth a visit.
In the Pesarina valley lies Pesariis (in the municipality of Prato Carnico), which is called the village of clocks, because it was the birthplace of the Solari family, the founders of the namesake clock factory. In the village centre clocks and two monumental sundials are displayed, which represent the evolution of the local industry. Furthermore, you can visit Casa Bruseschi, a typical Carnic aristocratic residence of the 17th-18th centuries containing period furniture and tools.
